How often have we been told that "time is money"? Sure enough, that statement rings true if you earn more than minimum wage. After all instead of planting a garden yourself you can earn money at your job and hire someone for less to plant it for you. You could surely hire a chaperone to take your children for hikes for much less than you earn in your cubicle. In fact you could hire somebody to do just about everything in your life for less money than you make at work. You could hire them to live your life while you spend your life at work.

Sound silly? Really?

Your time is precious. In fact time is much more precious than money. Time is one of the most precious gifts we have. It is the gift of life itself. How we choose to spend that time speaks volumes about who we are and the things that matter to us; not only to the world but to ourselves. Those precious moments of love and affection, reflection and contemplation, reverence and awe are priceless and it would never occur to us to apply the well worn fable of "time is money" to those moments.

Recognizing that time is our most precious commodity and that, like the commodities we extract from our environment, our supply is limited, is the first step towards building a sustainable lifestyle and a 21st century economy.
